Food sensitivity testing involves observing the body’s response to the presence of specific foods over time. This is not a food allergy, which tends to have abrupt and severe symptoms. Sensitivity reactions can manifest themselves more slowly and may not be as obvious.

Food sensitivity testing is requested for people when they experience unwanted digestion, energy or overall comfort changes after food intake. These changes are frequently difficult to understand if you don’t have additional information. The test provides a basic point of reference for exploring food and body reactions as a unit.

Most of the time, the test involves blood reactions to typical foods. This can help identify trends that can relate with daily food intake and its effect.

Why people opt to undergo testing.

There are lots of reasons why people would consider a person’s food sensitivity tests. Some experience fatigue following specific foods, others may see bloating or discomfort, which they are not able to identify the cause of. They may be present for a while and then disappear, making it difficult to connect to food.

Typically, the first step in food sensitivity testing for individuals is a small blood sample. This is collected in clinic or collection centre and submitted to a laboratory for review.

The lab tests the blood’s response to a list of common foods. These tend to be all types of dairy, grain, fruit, and meats. The results are presented in terms of the level of reaction, in groups to facilitate interpretation.

There is no need to alter the diet prior to the test. Maintain normal eating patterns, which allows the results to reflect actual eating behaviour over time. This implies more relevance to day-to-day activities and less relevance to short-term changes.

Food sensitivity tests for individuals are useful to raise awareness about food consumption. Others write notes of the meals they eat and how they feel after eating them. This could reveal patterns over time that may have gone undetected earlier.

The daily diet doesn’t have to be rigid or restrictive. Most people still enjoy a variety of foods with an understanding of their body’s reaction. Simple changes can easily fit into regular daily routines, but may have different effects on different individuals.
